How VAT Is Calculated Step by Step
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied to most goods and services. Understanding how to calculate it is essential for businesses, freelancers, and anyone working with prices and invoices.
Current VAT rates
In Albania, the standard VAT rate is 20%. Certain goods and services have a reduced rate of 6%.
In Kosovo, the standard VAT rate is 18%. A reduced rate of 8% applies to bread, milk, medicines, and other essential services.
In Italy, the standard IVA rate is 22%. Reduced rates of 10% and 4% apply to specific categories like food, healthcare, and books.
Formula to add VAT
When you have a net amount and want to find the gross total including VAT:
VAT = Amount × (VAT% ÷ 100)Total = Amount + VATExample: A product costs 1,000 EUR before VAT at a 20% rate:
- VAT = 1,000 × (20 ÷ 100) = 200 EUR
- Total with VAT = 1,000 + 200 = 1,200 EUR
Formula to remove VAT
When you have a total that already includes VAT and want the net amount:
Net Amount = Total ÷ (1 + VAT% ÷ 100)Example: A total of 1,200 EUR includes 20% VAT:
- Net amount = 1,200 ÷ (1 + 20 ÷ 100) = 1,200 ÷ 1.20 = 1,000 EUR
- VAT = 1,200 − 1,000 = 200 EUR
Why does this matter?
- Invoice accuracy: Correct VAT ensures your invoices are compliant with tax regulations.
- Price comparison: Compare offers on the same basis (net vs net or gross vs gross).
- Budget planning: Know the true cost of goods and services excluding tax.
- Tax compliance: Avoid penalties from incorrect VAT reporting.
